Episode 13

MONA pulls out her keys and opens her door. She is laughing as she opens it.

MONA - Ha ha ha ha! Wait, wait tell me again!

MIYA - Why are you so damn silly!

MONA - Ha ha ha, you better stop cursin' before I tell Mom! Tell me again!

(MONA closes the door after MIYA enters.)

MIYA - Okay. So me and Mike go inside right...

MONA - Yeah.

MIYA - So we up in there, and Mike sees his ex girlfriend. Some chick.

MONA - Was she cute?

MIYA - Hells no!

(MONA laughs again as she plops down on her sofa.)

MONA - So then what happened?

MIYA - So anyway, we get up in there and Mike sees her with the white boy.

MONA - The Sigma.

MIYA - Yeah, him. So he walks right up to him and starts to laugh in dude's face.

MONA - Ha ha ha ha! So what does the white boy do?

MIYA - Wait, but he warned Mike first! That was the funny thing!

MONA - Oh God that is hilarious!

MIYA - Then wham! White boy clocks him right in the face!

(MONA falls off the sofa and on to the floor. She's laughing so hard that tears are falling out her eyes.)

MIYA - You are so stupid!

MONA - He got decked by a white boy! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

MIYA - Ha ha ha! Yeah! That surfer dude knocked him out!

MONA - Oh my God! Mike so can't fight! And he talks so much trash!

MIYA - Yeah! Your boyfriend is crazy! So anyway, white dude knocks him on his ass, jumps on him and they have to break it up! He didn't even get a lick in!

MONA - Oh poor baby!

MIYA - Why the hell does he keep pickin' fights and gettin' his butt kicked?

MONA - Who knows! I told you Mike is arrogant. That's why I like him!

MIYA - You would!

MONA - Man, I wish I was there to see that mess!

MIYA - Well you know Ronda was there.

MONA - She was?

MIYA - Oh let me tell you! Sharonda is there with one of her sorority sisters and they almost get into a fight too!

MONA - Sharonda and her soror?

MIYA - No. Sharonda's soror and some other chick that was in the diner! There was so much drama goin' on that it was hard to keep up!

MONA - Wait a minute!

(MONA grabs her phone and calls SHARONDA.)

MONA - Dag! The one day with all the drama and I aint there!

SHARONDA - Hey.

MONA - Hey, what happened at the diner!

SHARONDA - A lot! Where are you?

MONA - At my place.

SHARONDA - Okay cool, we're gonna come over real quick. We need a place to crash. My soror is really upset right now.

BRANDON and BRENDON are walking together on the yard. They are walking toward the Fine Arts building.

BRENDON - Man you lying!

BRANDON - Naw man! She was pissed!

BRENDON - You lucky she didn't haul off and slap you and Breanna!

BRANDON - Naw, that wasn't goin' down. Denice aint violent. Just pissed.

BRENDON - Yeah but you never know. You hurt her bad.

BRANDON - No I didn't.

BRENDON - Bran, what are you talking about? You broke her heart. Do you know how long she has loved you?

BRANDON - Then why she break up with me? We never get along, we constantly argue, it was doomed from the start.

BRENDON - Whatever. Both yall are stupid as hell and I'm in the middle.

BRANDON - Whatever.

BRENDON - So you supposed to be datin' Breanna now or something?

BRANDON - Naw, we just friends.

BRENDON - You hit it?

BRANDON - Hell no stupid.

BRENDON - Don't lie.

BRANDON - No. It's not even like that.

BRENDON - Yeah aight.

(They get to the entrance to the building and see another band member.)

BRENDON - Wassup playa.

JOHN - What up.

BRENDON - You know how it is.

JOHN - Yall ready for this shit?

BRANDON - Oh no doubt. No doubt.

BRENDON - Yeah man, we bout to shake shit up at Ahpla!

JOHN - I hear ya. Let me roll with yall two then!

(They all laugh as they enter the building and walk upstairs to room 201. They see a few brothers at the door handing out brochures.)

MARK - Hey guys, welcome.

BRENDON - Thanks.

MARK - We're about to get started so come on in.

KAI - Yeah, we're about to get started.

(BRENDON takes a brochure from MARK. BRANDON and JOHN take brochures from KAI.)

JOHN - Do you guys know a lot about KKPsi?

BRENDON - Heck yeah. We been trying to do this for a minute so I know all their history.

BRANDON - Yeah man, imagine the twins both on the same line! My baby brother will finally get some letters!

(BRANDON playfully pushes BRENDON and shows his Phi Beta Sigma jacket that he has on.)

BRENDON - Whatever! Who you callin' a baby! I was supposed to come out first til you pulled my leg back in!

(They all laugh as they sit down and someone walks to the front of the room.)

STEVE - If yall can all take your seats, we can go ahead and get started.

(Everyone else sits down. MARK and KAI close the doors and sit with the other brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi sit in the front of the room.)

STEVE - Thanks for coming out guys and welcome to the interest meeting of Kappa Kappa Psi National honorary Band Fraternity Incorporated.

BRENDON whispers - It's about to be on!

(He and BRANDON slap hands. JOHN quietly laughs.)

STEVE - Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded November 27, 1919 at the former Oklahoma A&M College, now Oklahoma State. We have...

(BRANDON notices PROFESSOR, the band director, get up from his chair and walk toward the row that BRANDON and BRENDON are sitting in. He makes his way to the row and motions to BRANDON.)

BRANDON thinks - What the...

(PROFESSOR motions to BRANDON to come toward him.)

BRENDON whispers - What is Prof doing?

BRANDON whispers - I don't know. I'll be right back. I think he wants me to go over there.

BRENDON whispers - Okay.

(BRANDON gets up and starts to walk toward the end of his row in front of the other guys listening to STEVE talk.)

BRANDON thinks - What the heck is this about?

(As BRANDON gets to the end of the row, PROFESSOR starts to walk toward the back of the room. BRANDON follows.)

STEVE - ...motto which is strive for the highest. We instill...

(PROFESSOR opens the door and BRANDON follows him into the hallway. PROF closes the door then turns to address BRANDON.)

PROFESSOR - Brandon, what are you doing here?

MONA hangs up with her cousin SHARONDA who is on her way over with DENICE.

(MONA dials again.)

MONA - Sharonda is coming over. So we can get our laugh on when she gets here.

MIYA - You're stupid!

MIKE - Yo.

MONA - Hey Mikey.

MIKE - Hey! What's up babe.

MONA - I'm chillin'. Listen, I heard what happened. Are you okay?

(MONA is trying not to laugh.)

MIKE - Oh yeah, I'm cool.

(silence)

MONA - Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

MIKE - What's so funny!

MONA - I'm sorry sweetheart... ha ha ha ha, but you let that white boy get all in your ha ha ha ha ha... grill like that?

MIKE - He wasn't up in my grill! And mark my words, his day is coming!

MONA - Oh Mike chill out baby. Come on now. That's what you get for messin' with your ex girlfriend's man!

MIKE - Whatever!

MONA - Honey I'm not laughing at you, I'm lauhing with you.

MIKE - But I aint laughing!

(MONA burts our laughing.)

MIKE - Let me holla at you later Mona.

MONA - No wait, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... I'm ha ha ha sorry.

MIKE - Bye!

(MIKE hangs up. MONA keeps laughing.)

MIYA - Why you teasin' that boy like that.

MONA - He can take it. He's a big boy.

(There is a knock on the door.)

MIYA - That's Ronda.

(MIYA opens the door.)

MIYA - Hey.

(MIYA notices DENICE.)

MIYA thinks - What the hell is wrong with her?

SHARONDA - Wassup Miya.

(SHARONDA and DENICE walk in.)

SHARONDA - Hey.

MONA - Hey, what's goin' on?

(MONA quickly loses her smile when she sees DENICE. DENICE's eyes are puffy and red. It is clear that she has been crying.)

MONA - Are you alright?

DENICE - Yeah, I'll be okay.

(DENISE wipes her nose with a crumpled tissue that she has in her hand.)

MONA - Miya, get Denice some tissue please.

(MIYA hurries into the bathroom.)

MONA - Here, sit down. What's wrong?

SHARONDA - Well, that whole fiasco in the diner, Denice saw her ex with another girl.

MONA - Really?

DENICE - I mean, it aint been a week yet! Damn!

(Tears start to fall from DENICE's eyes and she pounds her fists into her lap.)

DENICE - He was probably cheating with that bitch!

SHARONDA - Look D, like I said, don't feed yourself information that you aren't sure of. All you're gonna do is upset yourself. We don't know if he was cheating or not.

(MIYA comes back with a whole roll of toilet tissue.)

DENICE - Thanks.

(DENICE wipers her eyes and blows her nose.)

MONA - Okay, so let me get this straight. You saw your boyriend in the diner with a different chick?

DENICE - Yes!

MONA - How long since yall broke up?

DENICE - I mean, its only been like two weeks! I mean actually less than that because...

(She looks in the air and starts to count her fingers.)

DENICE - Today is Friday so... man, less that a week!

SHARONDA - And it was messed up because they were holding hands and everything!

(DENICE starts to cry again.)

DENICE - Oh God! She's gonna be holding him! I hate him!

MONA - Damn!

(DENICE covers her face with the tissue she is holding. Tears are streaming down her face.)

SHARONDA - But you know, that's how men are. As soon as you break up with em, they go and get somebody else!

MONA - Yeah. I know exactly what that's like!

MIYA - All men are dogs!

SHARONDA - No, not all men. There are some good, honest brothers out there. But who wants to be with the nerd from astrophysics lab?

(Everyone laughs.)

DENICE - But I bet he'd never cheat!

(They laugh again.)

DENICE - It all went downhill right after he pledged. He got all caught up in crossing and whatever! I hate him and that Delta bitch!

MONA - Delta? He's with a Delta now?

DENICE - Hell yeah!

MONA - Oh shit!

MIYA - What fraternity is he in?

SHARONDA - Brandon? He's a Sigma.

MIYA - He is?

(Everyone looks at MIYA as she raises her voice as if surprised.)

MIYA - I can't believe a Sigma could do something like this to a Zeta! Isn't the bond greater than anything in the world? That's why I want to be a Zeta so bad!

(MONA quickly turns to MIYA.)

MONA - You still wannna pledge that bullsh... ooops, sorry yall.

XAVIER is walking CHRISTIAN to her car. CHRISTIAN is parked next to OCTAVIA who has just pulled in with APRIL.

CHRISTIAN - I know I came in this way so my car is out here somewher... oh wait...

(CHRISTIAN points to her car.)

CHRISTIAN - ...there I am. Right next to that silver BMW.

XAVIER - Oh okay cool.

(They start to walk toward the car. OCTAVIA gets out of the driver's side while APRIL is looking in the mirror.)

OCTAVIA - Will you hurry up so I can put my alarm o....

OCTAVIA thinks - Oh my God!

(She sees XAVIER coming with his arm around CHRISTIAN. XAVIER hasn't seen her yet.)

OCTAVIA thinks - Oh shoot! Oh shoot!

OCTAVIA - Uh April...

(She quickly sits back in the car.)

OCTAVIA - Uh... maybe we should come back another time.

APRIL - Huh?

OCTAVIA - Ya know, I really don't wannt shop today. Let's head back home!

APRIL - Head back home? What are you talking about? What's wrong with you?

CHRISTIAN - Wow, that BMW is hot.

XAVIER - I'm not really into fancy cars. Its okay.

APRIL - What's the matter with you? Don't be ridiculous! Of course we wanna shop! Why the heck did we come way out here just to...

OCTAVIA - April! Don't get out the car!

APRIL - What!

(XAVIER walks CHRISTIAN to the driver side which is right next to OCTAVIA's passenger side where APRIL is. XAVIER looks inside the BMW.)

XAVIER - Actually, this is kinda nic... hey... that's...

(APRIL turns around and looks out her window.)

APRIL thinks - Xavier?

APRIL - Xavier?

(APRIL notices CHRISTIAN opening her car door.)

APRIL - Chr... wait, hold up...

(APRIL tries to open her door but CHRISTIAN is in the way.)

APRIL - Hey! Hey!

(CHRISTIAN feels the car door brush up against her back. She turns around.)

CHRISTIAN - What the...

APRIL - Hey bitch! Let me out!

CHRISTIAN - Huh?

(CHRISTIAN steps aside and APRIL opens the door.)

APRIL - What you doin' with my man!

CHRISTIAN - What?

(XAVIER steps in front of CHRISTIAN and faces APRIL.)

XAVIER - April! April calm down! This isn't what it looks like!

APRIL - Oh sure! Tell me anything!

XAVIER - Calm down!

CHRISTIAN - No Xavier, tell her the truth!

(XAVIER turns around.)

XAVIER - What?

(CHRISTIAN smiles and folds her arms.)

CHRISTIAN - Tell her the truth. We can't hide it anymore baby. Just go ahead and tell her.

The Kappa Kappa Psi interest meeting is in progress.

STEVE - ...by our ten founders. The chapter here at Ahpla University has a strong and powerful tradition. As all of you know, we are the baddest band in the land and can't nobody touch us! Especially my section. Where my trumpets at! AU!

(Some of the interested men play in STEVE's section and they throw their hands up and do the Ahpla call.)

KAI - What! Where's that drumline!

BRENDON - AAAAU!

JOHN whispers - Aw shut up!

(Everyone laughs as the drumline gets loud and STEVE quiets everyone down.)

STEVE - Aight aight aight, take it easy guys. I didn't mean to hype everybody up!

(Everyone laughs again and quiets down.)

STEVE - Okay, back to what I was sayin'. Here at Ahpla, we maintain a very strong tradition and take our committment to this organization very seriously.

BRENDON thinks - Where the hell is Bran?

(BRENDON turns around and looks for his brother. He only sees that the door is closed at the back of the room.)

STEVE - The proper procedure to follow up on your interest into Kappa Kappa Psi is to set up an interview with one of the brothers of the fraternity. After this interest meeting has ended, you all will walk up to this table and speak to either myself or one of the brothers seated. You can set up the date and time of your interview then and schedule it with us.

BRENDON thinks - I guess I can fill out an interview time for Brandon too if he doesn't come back in.

STEVE - After you interview successfully, the next thing is the audition. Each person has to audition and the requirement for the audition will be given to you at the interview. After your audition, you will be notified for further instructions. Kai.

(KAI stands up and STEVE sits down.)

KAI - Now there are a few things that we need to make very clear. This is a conversation that comes up for us each year and we need to be perfectly clear on a few things.

(KAI glances at BRENDON, then looks away as he continues.)

KAI - All of us are in the marching strong here at Ahpla. So we are all band members. That is obvious. Unfortunately though, all of you will not be accepted into Kappa Kappa Psi. And even those chosen to become eigth notes for line will not complete the process. This should not however hinder you in your performances for Ahpla University.

(He pauses to let that point sink in.)

KAI - We still march, we are still your boys. We still play in your section. We still got each other's back. But everyone isn't KKPsi material and that is okay. Do not take it personal if you are not selected. Do not quit the band if you are not selected. Do not hate a KKPsi member and squirt lotion on our faces when we are asleep on the bus!

(Everyone laughs.)

KAI - But in all seriousness, we have had people quit the band or try to change sections becuase they weren't selected and that's not cool. So understand that your committment to the band will not cease. Our committment to our sections will not cease. And everything will be cool. Please take this to heart. We say this all the time and at least one person is affected by what I am saying each year. Don't let it be you.

(KAI sits down.)

STEVE - Some of the other basic information is in the brochures that we gave you. You can read up on that stuf and find out the five purposes of the organization. I would suggest you get to know these. All five. Are there any questions?

(silence)

STEVE - Good. Okay, if everyone can start to form a line at both of these tables, we can start to schedule interview days and times.

(Everyone gets up and starts to make their way toward the tables.)

JOHN - Where did Brandon go?

BRENDON - I don't know but I'll sign him up for an interview.

JOHN - Yeah, good idea.

(BRENDON looks back again and the door in the back is still closed.)

BRENDON - Hey Mark, what days are available for the interview.

MARK - Okay, you can have either next Tuesday or next Friday.

BRENDON - Is there any way I can come on Friday and my brother can come on Tuesday?

MARK - Uh yeah. Where did he go?

BRENDON - He stepped out. I don't know if maybe he got sick or something. But I thought I could maybe sign him up for one.

MARK - Yeah, that's cool. Let's say six o' clock for both you and him. Him on Tuesday and you on Friday.

BRENDON - Thanks.

MARK - Cool. Good luck.

(BRENDON turns and waits for JOHN who is signing in with KAI.)

BRENDON thinks - I can't believe Brandon missed this whole meeting like this. There's got to be a good reason.

(JOHN comes back over.)

BRENDON - Okay I am set. Monday at six. Oh cool. I did Brandon for Tuesday at six and me for Friday at six.

JOHN - Cool.

(They start to walk out. BRENDON pulls out his cell phone.)

BRENDON - Brandon!

(His phone dials BRANDON's number as they walk past the door and into the hall.)

JOHN - You callin' your brother?

BRENDON - Yeah.

BRANDON - Yo.

BRENDON - Hey man! Where you at?

BRANDON - Walking back to the room.

BRENDON - Back at the room? Why did you leave the meeting?

BRANDON - Because... Prof said that since I'm no longer in the band I can't pursue his fraternity... KKPsi!

CHRISTIAN - No Xavier, tell her the truth!

(XAVIER turns around.)

XAVIER - What?

(CHRISTIAN smiles and folds her arms.)

CHRISTIAN - Tell her the truth. We can't hide it anymore baby. Just go ahead and tell her.

XAVIER - Tell her?

(XAVIER turns fully around to face CHRISTIAN.)

XAVIER - What truth?

CHRISTIAN - Go ahead and tell her about us. She might as well know.

APRIL - I might as well know what!

CHRISTIAN - Xavier and I have been seeing each other for about two months now!

APRIL - What!

XAVIER - What! What are you doing!

CHRISTIAN - Let's just come clean sweetheart.

XAVIER - Come clean? What are you talkin' about!

(He quickly turns back to APRIL.)

XAVIER - April she's lying! I'm not seeing her!

(APRIL ignores him and stares at CHRISTIAN.)

APRIL - Oh so you think that's funny! You think that's funny! I'll come wipe that smile right off your face!

CHRISTIAN - Whatever April!

XAVIER - April she is lying! I never cheated on you! I never would!

APRIL - Then why would she say such a thing!

XAVIER - I have no idea! But it aint true! Christian tell her that thats not true!

(CHRISTIAN is laughing as she has conveniently walked past the two of them and to her car.)

CHRISTIAN - What? Your girl don't trust you?

(She opens the door of her car.)

CHRISTIAN - Thanks for the movie Z. I'll call ya.

APRIL - Movie? What movie?

(CHRISTIAN starts her car.)

APRIL - You went on a date to the movies with her?

XAVIER - No no no! I came here to see The Passion of the Christ and she was already here. It was coincidence and we sat together. We were buying tickets to the same movie already.

APRIL - What! You took her to see the Jesus movie?

XAVIER - I didn't take her to see anything! She was here when I got here! I didn't know she was gonna be here!

(CHRISTIAN backs her car up and waves as she starts to pull away.)

APRIL - I can't believe you would see that with her! I wanted to take you to see that! Why would you see that without me!

XAVIER - I wanted to see it alone.

APRIL - But you didn't!

XAVIER - I didn't know Christian was gonna be here! I'm tellin' you the truth!

APRIL - She is obviously taking more out of this then you did! She's sayin' that yall been dating for two months!

XAVIER - Look, I don't know what that is about! I think she was just trying to get under your skin. I don't know. But trust me when I tell you tht I aint messin' with nobody else.

APRIL - How many other places have you shown up and not known she was gonna be there?

XAVIER - No other places! This was the first time I've ever seen her off campus!

(silence)

(APRIL is visibly angry.)

XAVIER - Look, I know you're here with your line sister but would it be okay if I drove you home now? I've been meaning to talk to you anyway and maybe now is a good time.

APRIL - Talk to me? Talk to me about what?

XAVIER - About a few things.

APRIL - About what!

(XAVIER glances over the car at OCTAVIA who is standing by listening to every word. He speaks softer.)

XAVIER - I just need to talk to you okay? Is that alright?

APRIL - Why you whisperin' and soundin' all shady? I mean, come out and say it! Just be a man and say what's on your mind Xavier! I aint gotta get in the car, you can tell me whatever it is right here! You want to see Christian don't you? You want to start dating Christian!

XAVIER - No! I don't want to start dating Christian!

(silence)

XAVIER - But I don't want to date you either.
